If you check the server log, you'll probably see something to the effect of 'error waiting for CGI to exit', or 'CGI exited with signal 11'. The best way to debug CGIs is to set the appropriate environment variables (CONTENT_LENGTH for POST and QUERY_STRING for GET) and try running the program on the command line; Strange things can also happen if you forget to flush stdout, in the event of calling another program from your CGI. -krish -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> krish menon, webmaster - iway internet services |*| krish@iw.net * 140 n. phillips, suite #404, sioux falls sd 57102 |*| webstart@iw.net * telephone: (605) 331-4211 (w) (605) 331-6585 (h) |*| http://www.iw.net * <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 1 Jul 1996 08:52:08 -0700 Reply-To: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service Sender: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service From: Richard Galpin Subject: Intel PC plus NT as a server. For my new project I am under more price pressure and need to use lower cost PC hardware. The logical fit to this is to use WindowsNT. Can anyone who is using this configuration with the GNNServer please give me some feedback about their experiences. My project will consist of a significant number of web sites, probably more than 40, but each with a relatively low transfer rate. Given each web site will need it's own IP address I would like to know your experinces in configuring NT to address this while using the GNNServer. I am planning to use 64MB of RAM, is this enough. Any general information about your experiences with this configuration would be most helpful. If you're a Unix head, consider Intel Solaris as well. Intel Solaris works just like Sparc Solaris with the following exceptions: - SSL isn't available - The Illustra server is unsupported (Note: You can run Illustra on SunOS or Windows NT and access it from Intel Solaris. You can also run an older, unsupported version of Illustra on Intel Solaris but you'll still need a supported machine as a license server). I'm not saying Windows NT is a bad platform - in fact it's our most popular platform and we are very careful to make sure all functionality is supported on both NT and Unix. However, if you're an experienced Unix user, Intel Solaris may be easier for you to get up and running on. Linux and FreeBSD are not supported. >Can anyone who is using this configuration >with the GNNServer please give me some >feedback about their experiences. > >My project will consist of a significant number >of web sites, probably more than 40, but each >with a relatively low transfer rate. > >Given each web site will need it's own IP address >I would like to know your experinces in configuring >NT to address this while using the GNNServer. See: http://www.tools.gnn.com/server/docs/2.01/con-ch2.htm for more info. Note that the instructions say 16 is the limit on a single interface but I've heard of people configuring many more. I think Intel Solaris can easily handle 100 or more aliases. You could also try adding multiple interfaces on NT, each with 16 addresses. >I am planning to use 64MB of RAM, is this enough. Although I would call myself a NT-Advocate I would stay away from NT for this purpose. I am running a single-homed GNNServer on a Intel-Box with 32 Mb and it works flawless. Therefore I did consider running NT for multihomed setup. According to information I picked up in comp.infosystems.www.server.ms-windows, NT suffers from a bug in it=B4s= TCP/IP stack which is making it nearly impossible to run more than 16 IP-Addresses. One user reported a setup where he could run a maximum of 21 IP-Addresses. According to one posting Microsoft will fix this bug in the final release of Windows NT 4.0. So your premier choice is propably SunSolaris for Intel. At 08:52 01.07.96 -0700, you wrote: >Hello, > >I am in the planning stages of setting up a new >web server using the GNNServer. The production release of PCthreads (tm) and DCE threads for Linux has been
uploaded to both sunsite.unc.edu and tsx-11.mit.edu. Both kits have been in
Beta test for about 9 months and have been dramatically improved because of
feedback I have received. I apologize for not answering all of you, but
time just wasn't available. The kits should be available within a few days
depending on how backlogged the uploads have become.

The two distributions (PCthreads (tm) and DCE threads) include full source
(including Makefiles, etc.,) for the following libraries:

libpthread ELF and AOUT version of POSIX .1c multithread library
libpthread_dce ELF and AOUT versions of DCE threads.
libpthread-ext ELF and AOUT versions of DCE exception handling
libsock_r ELF and AOUT thread-safe versions of BSD socket library
liblock ELF and AOUT versions of shared/exclusive locks and
                    priority locks (minimize priority inversion).

The following are the LSM files for PCthreads (tm) and DCE threads respectively.

Hello, Here's a common problem to check: Are you using a "system dsn"? A system datasource is accessible to the GNNserver when it runs as a service as the "system account". If you just logged into the machine as a random user and configured the datasource it would only be available to that user, not the system account. This means that if you run the GNNserver as that same user in a console window (i.e., bin\nsd -fc nsd.ini) it will connect just fine but when you try starting the service it won't. Now there are two ways to fix this: 1. Configure the datasource as a "system datasource" using the latest odbc control panel or 2. Use the services control panel to configure the GNNserver to start as the user you configured the datasource with. Hope this helps. If you need an Intel UNIX box, I'd >suggest BSD or Linux before I'd consider Solaris for x86. Hello, If you are willing to run Apache than Linux or FreeBSD will work fine. However, to run GNNserver you will need Intel Solaris because there are currently no plans for GNNserver 2.1 on Linux or FreeBSD (this topic has been covered many times on the list - suffice it to say Linux and FreeBSD don't have an adequate threads interface to support GNNserver). It has been our experience that Intel Solaris is 100% source code compatible with Sparc Solaris. In fact, there is no code anywhere in GNNserver specific to Intel Solaris - the "port" was really just a recompile using all the same compile options we use for Sparc Solaris. It is true that much commercial software isn't available for Intel Solaris. However, GNNserver is available (along with Netsite Commerce Server - IBM is re-selling it) and while you can't run Illustra locally on Intel Solaris you can access a remote Illustra server just fine. Also, much of the world of CGI is simply Perl scripts and you can definitely get the latest version of Perl for Intel Solaris. One final note: SunSoft has recently reconfirmed their commitment to Intel Solaris, admitting that they haven't been putting much effort into promoting it in the past. This is a good move for Sun - Sparc is a good chip but in the end it can't compete with Intel. To stay in the OS business they're going to have to support and promote Intel hardware. I'm hoping this will translate into a larger and more active Intel Solaris community where all the goodies available for Sparc Solaris are also available for Intel Solaris. So, the recommendation from the GNNserver development team: Intel Solaris is an excellent OS for GNNserver. Your problem is that the expired 00 license is conflicting. Try deleting the D:\ILLUSTRA\keys\00.lic file and rebooting. That should clear up the problem. One more thing: The 00 key was used by the IQT32 program which you will no longer be able to use. Instead, use the nsql command line program in the GNNserver bin directory. Nsql works like msql but uses the 11000 key instead of the 00 key. A peek at the logs reveals there are 6 key files, and all but one >expire in 2006: I think a whole bunch of us are going to tear out our hair today. Here is the deal on the licensing and key expiration: Two keys exist for the Illustra database. One (older one from betas, etc) expires on July 2. This key allows the Illustra database to run AND lets you use the graphical configuration utility IQT as well as msql. The other key expires in year 2006 and is for Illustra database ONLY. This second key is not available separately, but is BUILT-IN into the Illustra installation. The ill31nt.exe file which can be downloaded from www.tools.gnn.com is a self-installing file that installs Illustra, ELM license manager AND THE YEAR 2006 KEY. What you need to do now is stop GnnServer, stop Illustra default and Illustra ELM License service, run the ill31nt.exe file to reinstall Illustra. Some notes on this: 1) Do not reinstall template1 sample database. 2) Installing just ELMD license manager does not work. You MUST reinstall Illustra! I hope this helps. I am not with AOL/GNN/NaviSoft but I have worked with GNN/AOL/NaviServer for NT for almost a year now and am probably the next best thing to it. :) --=_03tW16g.bO1996u.N21d000A.r07Y.17:005cd8 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="alexsig.txt" Content-Description: The Sender's Signature ---------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Khassin AM Computers mailto:akhassin@am.net 1040-B N. I modified the gettcl.tcl script and came up with a script called easytcl.tcl that lets you do Tcl maintenance with Netscape Frames. Install it and use /NS/TCL instead of /NS/GetTcl. When you access /NS/TCL all the tcl scripts will be in in one frame and another frame will display a text box (a bigger one) for editing scripts. A frame at the top gives links to refresh the list of scripts, re-initialize tcl, and a link to /NS/Admin. All the functionality of /NS/GetTcl is preserved only it does everything on one page. Get it at- http://www.gnnhost.com/develop/code/index.htm. Or I can email it to you. <' >< <' >< <' >< <' >< <' >< <' >< <' >< Hal M. (Bad move, I'd say, marketing-wise) Jeff, I gotta agree that naming this AOLPress is a very bad move. AOL may have a limited amount of brand-name value within a certain sector of the computer-using community. But I would have to say that among professional web designers and server administrators, well, it's a real downer. The AOL brand is, warranted or not, looked down upon - considered something of a joke, actually. PLease get on your phone, call up Steve Case, and express to him the possibility that this is a big mistake. The only way this makes sense to me is if you are going to concede the higher-level web developer market to Front Page and Netscape Gold and position your product (which I think still maintains some distinct advantages over those two) strictly as a tool for AOLers to publish their personal pages. And given the very high turnover rate among AOL's "5 million" subscribers, THAT may not be so smart either... Just my $0.02, -- Andrew Dashiell Wanderlust, Inc. Here is what I did for something similar: select distinct *, (current_date - created) ... This actually returns all the rows, but then as you run through your while loop you only collect the records the [ns_set get $row Minus] is less that or equal to the time you are specifying. Minus is an extra field it adds when you do a math function like that. This is the only way I have found to compare a date against a digit. Hope this helps. This would be the case if you registered for GNNserver before we started giving out a 10-year back in April of this year. To install the 10 year key, follow these steps: 1. Register as an AOLserver user at: http://www.aolserver.com/server/register/entryform.html If you registered as a GNNserver user, you can look up your existing registration at: http://www.aolserver.com/server/register/searchform.html 2. Write down the license key which is returned after registering. 3. Stop Illustra and ELMD. On Unix, run the "mistop" and "elmadmin -k" commands in the bin Illustra directory. On NT, stop the "Illustra default" and "ELMD Administrator" services using the Services Control Panel. 4. Unless you're a current Illustra customer with valid license keys received directly from Illustra, delete the existing license key files so they do not interfere with the special AOLserver keys. On Unix, they're in the adm directory of the Illustra directory. On NT, they're in the keys directory of the Illustra directory 5. Install the new license key. On Unix, run the milicense script in the bin Illustra directory. On NT, double click the "ELMD Administrator" icon in the Illustra Program Manager group. 6. Restart Illustra. On Unix, run the "startdaemon" and "mirun" scripts in the bin Illustra directory. On NT, start the "ELMD Administrator" and "Illustra default" services with the Services Control Panel. Important Notes: 1. The new key is a 10 year, host-independent key for running AOLserver and the nsql command. The license will not allow you to run the Unix msql or NT iqt32 commands as was the case with the previous 6-month key. 2. The Alpha OSF port of Illustra uses an older style key which will expire at the end of this year. At that time Alpha customers must upgrade to the latest release of Illustra which will support the 10 year key. 3. If you are still running version 2.4 of Illustra on SunOS or Solaris, you'll need to upgrade to Illustra 3.1 to use the 10 year key. If it's not convenient to upgrade at this time, you can also use the Alpha OSF key until the end of the year. It contains both C and Tcl code for many different things I have done so far in working for Digital City. I will update scripts that are there when I make a change to it, be it bug fix or feature, and will continue to add new code as I write it. Please stop by and see if there is anything that can help you out, or root through the code to see if I do something you need an example of. If you have any ideas of other things you would like to see up there, find any bugs, or just have questions please let me know. The code that is up there has only been tested on SGI Indy and Challenge hardware, unless otherwise noted, and was written for the 2.03x version of the server. I have not yet downloaded the 2.1 server so I don't know how this code will react, although I would be surprised if it didn't work. I do not make any claims to the stability of this code and can not stress enough for you to read both the notes and the code completely before using it. Please stop by, take code, and let me know about it. David Whittle Internet Systems Developer Digital City, Inc. Sorry, Andrew, but I disagree. Have you looked at what AOL is doing these days? AOL folk have worked hard to make AOL much more net-friendly than it was, and AOL has established programs such as "give back to the net" with resources such as huge mirror sites and search facilities, freely available to all net users. Is this a better usage of creating forms on the fly? What I want to do is, use a tcl script to query information on a database, and use that information obtain from the query to use in a form generated inside the tcl script that uses the information obtained to enter more information in another database? I don't really understand your question, but all the time I 1) set a tcl variable to a form with no values 2) query the database to grab the previously entered values 3) use ns_mergeform to merge the database values into the HTML INPUTs Unfortunately, Step 3 is wicked slow (requiring as many as 1 billion instructions on an HP RISC processor or 10 seconds of crunch time) , though maybe you can beg Doug and Jim to rewrite ns_mergeform (I have). ---------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jul 1996 12:27:52 -0700 From: gnat Subject: Re: current_date On Fri, 5 Jul 1996, Malte Sussdorff wrote: > Hi, > > I've got the following problem.(Unix/Illustra). > For each entry i make a timestamp with the illustra sql command > 'current_date'. > Now i want to retrieve only those, that are not older then 14 days. > I think i must do it with an sql select, but don't know exactly how. > Any help would be appreciated. Personally, I do like my query better (see above), but if you are determined to do something like this, then select distinct *, (current_date - created) as billgatesismypersonalhero ... will return the result of the subtraction as "billgatesismypersonalhero" and let you do [ns_set get $row billgatesismypersonalhero] rather than having to accept Illustra's naming. ---------- 1. The script gets a db handle, generates output, and releases the handle. The ns_text module and the script use the same pool, and I have configured it for five simultaneous connections. Shortly after evaluating this command, GNNServer 2.031 on NT 3.51sp4 came to a halt, refusing connections on all virtual servers. Is it possible that the source document for ns_textindex may not use a db handle to the same db? Will ns_textindex always perform a GET of the document, or, if I put the contents of the document in a text file, will ns_textindex pick it up? As a stopgap, I was thinking of registering a procedure to /docs/indexable, and then writing the temp file to [ns_pageroot]/docs/indexable/tmpID, and issuing ns_textindex /docs/indexable/tmpID, then deleting tmpID. The procedure would redirect a GET on /docs/indexable/tmpID to /docs/live/tmpID, which would dynamically generate the page. If ns_textindex does a GET, however, then this wouldn't work if ns_textindex can't handle a db-generated doc. This is a fine way to generate forms on the fly. By generating your form within a script, you include query results and other changing infomration as choices or defaults in your form. The only disadvantage is that the form is harder to change & update. If you need the dynamic functionality, though, it's worth it. Hi Cass- We've been using GNNServer on NT 3.51 for over a year (Started with NaviS= erver 1.0 and have grown with the software), and have had VERY FEW proble= ms with it.... Hello, From the note for HP/9 on the download page: HP HP/UX 9 AOLserver 2.0 requires support for threads on all platforms. On HP/UX, threads are part of the OSF Distributed Computing Environment (DCE). DCE is bundled with HP/UX 10 but is an optional product for HP/UX 9. I included the modules for *cgi* and *shtml* and the extension for SSI files is *.shtml*, but every time, I try to view a file with that extension, my browser (netscape 2 + 3) tells me something like "you have tried to download a file of type text/x-server-parsed-html" and I have to tell netscape, what to do with that file. If I change the extension to *.html*, I get that message for every page I try to view. If I try to view the .shtml document with GNNpress, I also get an error message (something like "Can't view ..."). If I try to view exactly the same file off a U*IX host running the NCSA httpd, everything works as expected. What did I forget ? Thanks for your help. Bye. You're probably using trailer text, and you have the TrailerFindEnd option turned on. The server failed to find the end of your HTML page, in order to insert your trailer before the tags. When you have this option set, this happens often; it's a known problem. When this happens, the server instead adds the trailer text to the end of the document, after the tag. Most browsers, including Netscape, Explorer, and the AOL browser, will show the trailer text anyway. AOLpress will not. If the server log entries annoy you, I suggest turning TrailerFindEnd off for now; you'll get essentially the same behavior on your server, except the server log won't grow quite so fast. You didn't forget anything, it's just that server-parsed html is very hard to configure correctly the first time. Note that this is fixed in 2.1 beta. Here's what you need to do: 1. Goto the Setup Server page for configuring the nsshtml module in your virtual server. 2. By default, you should have ".shtml" under Extension. Remove it and any other settings you may have put here. 3. Add an appropriate entry under Mapping. e.g., if you want all .shtml files to be parsed, add "/*.shtml". doug -- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McKee America Online, Inc. The buildreturnpage proc, part of the pagebuilder module, contains this while loop: while {[ns_db getrow $db $row]} { set size [ns_set size $row] set tmptemplate $template for {set i 0} {$i < $size} {incr i} { set key "#[ns_set key $row $i]" set value [regsubquote [ns_set value $row $i]] regsub -all $key $tmptemplate $value tmptemplate } append tmppage $tmptemplate unset tmptemplate } This can be rewritten as below. Please keep in mind that I haven't tested this code, although I've used each part of it elsewhere. while {[ns_db getrow $db $row]} { set tmptemplate $template #below is a great little utility written by Phil Greenspun; #I've included a link below. It sets Tcl variables column_name #equal to each column's value for this row. set_variables_after_query #your specific code. It assumes that you have columns called # "image" and "another_column" in your table. if {$image == ""} { set image $another_column } #The next bit of code does the substitution into your template; #dumpvar simply returns the value of the variable whose name #is contained in $i. foreach i [info locals] { set res_value [dumpvar $i] regsub -all "#$i" $tmptemplate $res_value tmptemplate } append tmppage $tmptemplate unset tmptemplate } Here are the supporting scripts: Page builder module: http://www.primehost.com/members/develop/code/pagebldr.txt Phil Greenspun's utilities (with set_variables_after_query): http://demo.webho.com/view-source.tcl?filename=/tcl/utilities.tcl proc dumpvar var { upvar $var v if {[set ix [array names v]] != ""} { foreach i $ix {append res $v($i)\n} } elseif [info exists v] { if [catch {set $var $v} res] {set res "No known variable [list $var]"} } else { set res "No known variable [list $var]" } return $res } Please let me know if this works for you! Hello, AOLserver 2.1 (aka GNNserver) includes the "ns_schedule_daily" Tcl command for just this purpose. In an initialization script you could have: ns_schedule_daily -thread 1 30 myproc which would run "myproc" in it's own thread at 1:30am every day. This command works the same on NT and Unix. On Unix, you could also use: ns_atsignal {ns_thread begindetached myproc} which would use the new "ns_thread" command to begin a thread running "myproc" in response to a SIGHUP, perhaps sent from cron with something like: kill -HUP `cat /usr/local/aolserver/log/nspid.9876` The latest AOLserver 2.1 beta will be posted on the www.aolserver.com WebSite sometime tomorrow afternoon. And, I'd need a db, call it Cart, to hold selected items, structured as follows: IP_address text QTY small integer Item text Price small integer Product_No text The client (buyer/shopper) can add (insert), drop (delete), or revise (update) items to the Cart all day. When done shopping, the client will be asked to pay by credit card through form/phone ... whatever. Questions 1. How do I capture the client's IP address when s/he signs on? 2. Will this db/IP_address implementation work? Thanks! Hi There- If the user is dialing into a terminal server, and obtaining an IP addres= s dynamically, the address will not be consistent between logins, therefo= re this is NOT an accurate method of identification. Would it be feasible to have the user register ONCE with the system to = obtain a "Shopping Club Number" which he could use to uniquely identify = himself to the system? Other possiblities would be to mask out the host segment of the IP addres= s as users from a single ISP will MOST LIKELY always show up within a giv= en network segment, however this is not a guarantee, and does not allow = for the possibility of the user having multiple providers. Illustra doesn't run on Win95 (although you can access a remote Illustra server or use a 32bit ODBC driver such as MS Access). 2. Sockets on Win95 cannot be turned into ordinary file handles or stdio FILE streams. This causes the ns_sock* Tcl commands and scripts which depend on them (such as ns_sendmail) to fail. Patch for socket driver for all platforms. 2. Workaround for bug in Intel and Sparc Solaris. Patch: We have posted a patch for the socket and export ssl drivers for AOLserver 2.1 beta 6. The patch corrects a problem transferring large files and can be downloaded from the same location as 2.1 beta: http://www.aolserver.com/server/2.1beta.html Simply download the apropriate driver and replace the cooresponding file in the bin subdirectory of the AOLserver directory. Solaris Workaround: A bug in Intel and Sparc Solaris 2.4 (and possibly 2.5) can cause AOLserver 2.1 to hang. When this happens you will find a "protocol error" message in the server log. To workaround this problem, set the "ListenThread" parameter of the socket and ssl drivers to "y" in each virtual server. To do so: 1. Access the setup server. 2. Select a virtual server. 3. Select the nssock (or nsssl) module 4. Select "Expert" mode. 5. Scoll to the bottom and in the "Addition Parameters" section enter "ListenThread" for the key and "y" for the value. 6. Press Update. 7. Repeat for all socket and ssl drivers in all virtual servers. Note: This workaround is only required for Intel and Sparc Solaris. The problem keeps the AOLserver from binding to more than one privileged port. To correct the problem, download the corresponding compressed nsd binary: Intel: http://www.aolserver.com/download/server/intel-solaris/nsd.Z Sparc: http://www.aolserver.com/download/server/solaris/nsd.Z and uncompress it in your bin aolserver directory, e.g.: % cd /usr/local/aolserver/bin % mv nsd nsd.old % uncompress nsd.Z % chmod +x nsd Here are the details of the problem: When AOLserver 2.1 is started as root, it forks a child process. The child immediately performs a setuid() to the non-root user configured in the nsd.ini file and begins multithreaded startup. This new multithreaded startup helps speed startup when the server is configured with multiple virtual servers. In such a post-setuid(), non-privileged state, the server would normally not be able to bind to any privileged ports (e.g., port 80) but the AOLserver uses a special trick to request privileged ports from the parent process which is still running as root. The parent process creates the socket, bind()'s to the privileged port, and sends it back to the child using sendmsg(). The problem on Solaris was that some unknown bug in the Solaris socket code was preventing more than one socket from being sent to the child. Actually, the socket was sent back fine and the child successfully issued a listen() call but in fact Solaris did not begin listening for connections. Instead, the socket was left in a strange bound but not listening state which you could see with the netstat -an command, e.g.: 199.221.53.97.80 *.* 0 0 0 0 LISTEN 199.221.53.98.80 *.* 0 0 0 0 BOUND 199.221.53.99.80 *.* 0 0 0 0 BOUND The solution to the problem was to have the parent process perform the listen() in addition to the bind() before sending the socket back to the child. As bind() is the privileged operation, issuing the listen() shouldn't be necessary. In fact, it wasn't necessary on any other platform. This was just another example of the buggy socket code in Solaris. We have tracked down the problem and a patched nsd binary can be downloaded from the GNNserver download page: http://www.tools.gnn.com/server/download.html This problem only affects GNNserver 2.04 and only the SunOS port - the Linux and FreeBSD ports are unaffected. Note: Unfortunately, the presence of this patch does not indicate a renewed commitment to the SunOS, Linux, and FreeBSD ports. There are still no plans to port AOLserver 2.1 to these platforms. In fact, this bug was found in the pthreads library which has caused us so much trouble in the first place. All SunOS, Linux, and FreeBSD customers are strongly encouraged to install Intel or Sparc Solaris on their hardware where AOLserver 2.1 is fully supported. Will this db/IP_address implementation work? > Here is a way in which a shopping cart system can be implemented: Although you can assume with reasonable degree of certainty that within 30 minutes or so an IP number is more or less the same person, it is not guaranteed. Here is an example. Every time you dial into an ISP you are usually assigned a different dynamic IP address. What that means is that if a visitor's connection to his ISP got interrupted while he was viewing your site, when he redials he might have a different IP address. Cookies are a good way to maintain state but they are not 100% reliable since a lot of users do not have browsers that support them. The only sure way to track a user through a site (and therefore his selections in your catalog) is to use URLs that incorporate a unique ID for each visitor. So, when someone enters a catalog they are assigned a unique ID. After that pages that they view are generated by the scripts to have URLs include the id, i.e. a link to the next page would be: http://www.catalog.com/NS/ShopCart/page3.htm?id=147132478 or something to that effect. Then your cart table would have a row with the id and all the items purchased, etc. We would be more than happy to develop such a shopping cart system for you. Depending on complexity you are looking at $3000-$5000. If you find somebody else using GNNServer who would want this system you can split this cost! --=_18tW07g.bO1996u.N16d000A.r07Y.57:004957 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="alexsig.txt" Content-Description: The Sender's Signature ---------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Khassin AM Computers mailto:akhassin@am.net 1040-B N. Probably, some of you have done it ... so I'd like to learn from your experience. The idea is based on the BIG assumption that a client would have a unique IP address; therefore, I would know who s/he is. (If this is a bad assumption then I'm dead in the water! :)) Rest in peace. The client (buyer/shopper) can add (insert), drop (delete), or revise (update) items to the Cart all day. When done shopping, the client will be asked to pay by credit card through form/phone ... whatever. Shopping carts are very 1994. When I do a system like this today, the first time the user asks to order something, I ask for all the information (address, credit card, whatever). I write back a magic cookie header with some kind of unique key (maybe his email address, maybe a number from a database-based sequence generator). Next time he says he wants to order something, my Tcl code sees the cookie header and says "do you want to add to your previous order?" Magic cookies work with all browsers from Netscape 1.0 onward I think. The main class of lusers without cookie capability are inside AOL. But of course, if they are satisfied AOL Achievers then they probably won't object to typing the same information over and over again. The DLL's and so on appear to be in >place - what's up here? Tcl now has a concept of a "shared" vs. "private" library. The /NS/TclInit URL now takes the library as the first parameter and unfortunately the top level Tcl admin page link doesn't pass this. Try following one of the re-init links on the shared and/or private view/edit Tcl admin pages. >As I understand it, I can now preload data from a database table into a >TCL array to be used as a lookup by *all* TCL threads. Is that the case? >What are the problems (apart from needing to reload the lookup when the data >changes)? Yes - this is a major new feature of the Tcl code in 2.1 which went through quite a revision internally since 2.0. Basically, all global variables, procedures, and open files are shared among the Tcl interpreters for a virtual server (there is still no sharing between virtual servers). This means your code can simply fill up a global variable at startup, say: set db [ns_db gethandle] set row [ns_db select $db "select a, b from mytable"] while {[ns_db getrow $db $row]} { set a [ns_set value $row 0] set b [ns_set value $row 1] set mydata($a) $b } and then access it anytime later with: proc myproc {conn context} { global mydata puts $mydata(foo) } One note: To acomplish the sharing, Tcl must make a copy private to the interp on *each* access of the global variable. This means that this code: global foo set tmp $foo ... do many things with $tmp ... is typically more efficient than: global foo ... do many things with $foo ... because each access of $tmp would not require a data copy from the global area whereas each time you accessed $foo Tcl would have to make a copy (don't worry - the copies are garbaged collected automatically at the end of the transaction and simultaneous multithreaded access is safe due to internal locking of the Tcl code). Another side affect is that $tmp won't change throughout the transaction whereas $foo could change through an action in another interp which may or may not be what you want. The distinction is subtle but important. If you take advantage of sharing data between interps, consider using some of the new thread synchronization routines as well (i.e., ns_mutex, ns_event, etc). Try searching for test_table on the ns_tables search form and then following the update link. Using entry attempts to add a second row for the test_table table which is in fact an integrity violation (the ns_tables table can only have one record per table). It let you associated relational data with pages and then do combination keyword/relational searching. Unfortuantely, no one used it, and it wasn't particularly flexible. The good news is that you have all the tools at your disposal in the Tcl api to write your own relational/full text system. If you just want to associate non-displayed keywords with your pages, I'm not sure how to do this, since all tags (including comments) are removed before full-text indexing. That's NT Server by the way - MS intends to tweak Workstation so it can't be used as a Web server. Here's the "Reader's Digest Condensed Version" of how it works in case it gives you any good ideas. I'm sure a similar technique could be implemented (more easily!) with the GNNServer. In order to create a "shopping basket", I tag each user with a unique serial number as they enter the site. How this is done is an implementation issue, but using the srand() function with an incremented seed worked in my case. This "user tag" is stored in each subsequent page passed to the user as a "hidden" variable. For instance, if a user's ID is ABC12345, each page passed back to the user would contain: In this way, all I need to do is examine the userid: key/value pair passed back with each POST operation to tell who sent it. You can then use this value with your "shopping basket" database to log all of the transactions performed by a particular user. If you are using a GET operation, the user ID code can be passed as a query string (http://www.mysite.com/mypage?userid=ABC12345). While this sounds simple in concept, in actuallity it manifests itself as a good deal of code. Some things that must be accomplished: 1. Identifying when the user is "entering" the site (indication is entry page URL with no hidden user ID value). 2. Clean-up: Identifying when the user has left the sight and purging all the old transactions. 3. Security: Detecting folks trying to hack the site 4. Error handling. 5. etc. I have not revisited this problem since those early days. I'm sure there are smarter ways to accomplish the same thing with all of the functionality provided by the newer WWW environments (using "cookies" perhaps), but what the hell... it worked. Solves the dynamically allocated IP address problem too. Hope this is helpful. I know the newest version requires version 3.51, but this is not what our school district owns. We are setting up an NT machine with 3.50, because we bought it a while ago to see if we liked it better than Novell. As it turns out, we didn't like it as well for File and Printing, but it does do internet services a lot better, so now that we are getting a 56k leased line, we pulled it out again. I managed to find a DNS server, and an SMTP program that will run on 3.50, and I thought it would be great to get one of the above Web Servers running on it, because NaviPress/GNNPress/AOLPress are so easy to use and setup, it would be great for high school students who want to make their own web pages (during study hall) and not have to deal with FTP. Bottom line: I need a version of NaviServer or GNNServer or AOLServer that will run on an intel-based Windows NT version 3.50. I don't care if it's an old Beta version with a bunch of security problems, or if it doesn't support Virtual Web servers, and I don't need the Illustra databasing program either. Our department doesn't have the money to upgrade our NT server to 3.51 right now though. Maybe I'm a little dense, but I have yet to find out how Illustra can be coerced into doing the following: 1. Extending an existing column of a table. I just need to add 2 characters to a column, that's it. A no-brainer, right? You mean go from CHAR(1) to CHAR(3) or something? I think you're hosed. You'll have to rename the column to old_column, then alter table foobar add column new_column char(3); update foobar set new_column = old_column; update foobar set old_column = null; 2. Deleting a column from a table. No, not rename, remove. Simple huh? I've spend over an hour on the phone with the Illustra tech's, and the seem to have difficulty understanding the nature of my questions. I'm sure I am not the only person on the planet who has asked these questions, so somebody out there has the answers. Then again, it's entirely possible that I'm just too stupid to use databases... Actually, I was just tonight telling someone outside the MIT Student Center that "you could train an ape to do what I do" [build relational database-backed Web sites]... If you had the Illustra User's Guide, you'd see that alter table can rename a column or a table, but it can't drop a column. This used to enrage me but then I realized that I could just update table_foobar set dead_column = NULL; and move on with my life. So rename your column to "this_would_be_history_if_I_were_an_Oracle_Achiever", NULL it out, and be happy. If you read my http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/wtr/illustra-tips.html then you'll see that you want to get your data model right the first time anyway. If you don't have a dead trees version of Illustra User's Guide, just go to http://www.illustra.com and look at all the docs on-line... Oops! I was thinking of NaviSoft. Illustra is still waiting to see if this Internet fad catches on... BTW, the full Illustra product is about $70,000... "Gee Wally, I sure wish I had $70,000 to blow on a database server with lousy documentation and non-standard SQL!" At least they did give you a quote. Oracle seems to randomly vary between $1,500 and $64,000 when you ask for a Web site quote. They've vaguely announced "new Internet pricing" but they're also going to wait another 27 years to see if this Internet fad catches on (i.e., the prices aren't on their Web site). Given the violence inflicted on http://photo.net/photo/ this weekend by the Illustra PLS Blade, I'm not sure why I'm defending Illustra SQL, but I can say that (1) the things that enrage me the most about Illustra SQL, e.g., "current_date - interval '1' month" can result in an error, are actually ANSI standard (2) the Illustra extensions per se are rather nice, e.g., the boolean type -- Philip Greenspun ------------------------------------------------------------- MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science 545 Technology Square, Rm 609, Cambridge, MA 02139, (617) 253-8574 Personal Web URL: http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/philg/ ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 23 Jul 1996 10:01:08 -0700 Reply-To: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service Sender: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service From: Doug McKee Subject: Re: Searching In-Reply-To: (petej@clickvision.com) >>>>> "Pete" == Peter M Jansson writes: Pete> Is there a way to get textblade-like searching available for Pete> more structured stuff? You're pretty much out of luck as far as using text blade if you don't want to use external files. However, you could try creating an auxiliary column where you keep a normalized version of the city and state (e.g., all lower case and 2 letter state abbreviations). What version are you running? There are a few shutdown problems in 2.1b6 on NT which cause the server to hang or crash at shutdown but generally this just means one or more connections didn't finish in the 60 second grace period for shutdown. On the www.aolserver.com site we almost always get this message because there's normally a few people downloading software from our site and the downloads take more than 60 seconds. -Jim _______________________ Jim Davidson jimbo@sb.aol.com Voice: (805) 882-2350 Fax: (805) 899-4316 ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 24 Jul 1996 10:42:33 -0700 Reply-To: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service Sender: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service From: Jim Davidson Subject: Re: Global Parameters Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 03:35 AM 7/24/96 -0400, Malte Sussdorff wrote: >Hello, > >I'm stuck on the following: > >I have a variable, that i use very often in nearly all my TCL Procedures. >It Contains an HTML List, wich is generated out of the Database. > >Any Possibility to make it global and to generate if something changes (i >would write to the variable as soon as something changes] ?? This particular site is owned by Hearst Corporation (a $3 billion publisher). The orders are sent (encrypted) on demand to a Hearst division whose only function is to insert orders for magazines and such into a IBM maintain VSAM file (yow!). From there, I guess they have their regular credit card processing. I'm not sure how to do it for a regular site. Presumably Netscape Secure Courier is the right thing, but I haven't looked into it because Hearst doesn't need/want it. Ryan, We have had rare instances where an ISP had incorrectly configured their network or DNS, which caused problems for that ISP's customers. We will deal with these promptly on a case-by-case basis; if anyone has such an access problem, please notify us right away at . I believe we are working on a couple of specific cases you've reported. You have a direct channel to our support manager, which is your best way to address such issues quickly. In this case, I also think tech support has also suggested modifications to your server configuration which might address some of these issues. Of course, if anyone knows of any bugs in Irix that might affect web or TCP/IP services, we'd like to hear about them too. We're working on permanent solutions, but we wanted to get these workarounds out to you quickly so everyone can begin to use the 1.2 version's enhanced features now. ----------- If, after the AOLpress install program has extracted the setup files, you receive one of the following errors you have encountered a known bug. "Setup is unable to decompress and copy all of the program files needed to proceed with the installation. Contact your software vendor. Error 112." or "Requires _SETUP.DLL and _ISRES.DLL (located in _SETUP.LIB) in order to operate properly. Please insure these files are located with setup.exe" This is caused by the presence of a file, _INST32I.EX_, in the systems temp directory (where the Installer extracts the setup files). The workaround is to remove this file and run the AOLpress installer again. The installer determines from the operating system which temp directory to use. It is usually c:\windows\temp, c:\temp, or c:\dos; if you don't know which is your temp directory, please check each of these locations for the file above. Error=-9 If you recieve an Error=-9 when installing AOLpress it means that the installer was damaged during the download. The solution here is to download the file again. If you are using AOL as your service provider we suggest signing off and signing back on before attempting the download again. ----------- Regards, Jeff Rawlings -- rawlings@primehost.com -- http://www.primehost.com/ Internet Marketing Manager, AOL PrimeHost *Web hosting with multiple-T3 connectivity and 7x24 monitoring *AOLserver software, with relational database and full APIs ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 13:26:10 +0000 Reply-To: jlemcke@image-sys.com Sender: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service From: Jack Lemcke Organization: Image Systems Inc. After receiving a query, the CGI-BIN connects via TCP/IP to a second NT-Server, where it requests a Datastream and passes these Data to a Java-Applet. This works well with the Spry and the EMWACS webserver. Under GNNserver the applet cannot connect to the remote server. I doublechecked the CGI-BIN configuration on our server, testing several cgi-bins (compiled C-Executables and Perl-Scripts), all worked well. Even our cgi-bin will return error-strings, but still no TCP/IP connection. Running the cgi-bin from the command prompt with the query string works well and we get the datastream in return. A simple solution would be a second Webserver (e.g. EMWACS) running on another port. But I would prefer to run only my favourite webserver (GNNserver) on this machine. I would appreciate any pointer to a solution. Try granting select privilege on the tables and columns tables for nsadmin: grant select on table tables to nsadmin; grant select on table columns to nsadmin; Without this privilege the AOLserver can't fetch the list of tables and their columns from the database which breaks most everything in the ad-hoc Tcl query system. Hello, By default the AOLserver does not pass any of the process environment except the PATH variable to the CGI which I think is different than most servers. Try setting the "SystemEnvironment" configuration key of the nscgi module to "on" which will pass these variables and see if your problem goes away. Cheers, -Jim p.s., It's also possible to communicate with a remote server through Tcl using the ns_sockoen commmand. This is typically much faster because it avoids the process creation of CGI. _______________________ Jim Davidson jimbo@sb.aol.com Voice: (805) 882-2350 Fax: (805) 899-4316 ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 19:32:56 -0700 Reply-To: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service Sender: Web Development with GNNserver and GNN Hosting Service From: Jim Davidson Subject: Re: Shutdown timeouts Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 09:49 PM 7/24/96 -0400, Peter M. Also, the access log >showed no accesses during the shutdown period. It only takes one hung connection which wouldn't show up in the access log to keep the server from shutting down. However, it is possible the server is just getting wedged at shutdown. The code which handles shutdown is pretty complex with several threads working in tandem and signalling each other when it's safe to exit. This signalling is done with Ns_Event's and on NT there's a potential race condition in the 2.0x Ns_Event code. At this point I'm guessing the shutdown event is getting missed and the shutdown thread just continues to wait. As the race condition is very rare and only on NT and since Ns_Event's aren't used in any critical systems while the server is actually running, there are no plans to post a patch for this problem. The Ns_Event code in 2.1 has been fixed and the shutdown code streamlined in general so we don't expect any shutdown problems with the next release. For now you can set the MaxStopWait [ns/parameters] key to a lower value, perhaps 10 seconds, to ensure a faster shutdown. I have completed the module that allows you to do this via Tcl. The idea is that you do the majority of the connection work through Tcl then pass the connection info, along with file names, to the module and it reads the info out of the content information and writes it to a file, then finds and saves the true file. Currently it only handles indiviual files. It you try uploading a directory it will crash, i'm not quite sure how to fix or block that. I have tested it with 2MB and smaller files with no trouble, it is designed to handle up to almost 10MB files. I tried for larger files but memset was giving me trouble with using an char array with INT_MAX elements. As it is you may be able to plug in a higher number and have it work, 9.9MB is enough for me and i'm not interested in picking at it until I figure out why memset doesn't like the giant array. Anyway, you can find it at http://www.deadend.org/dev/c_tcl.html. Please let me know if you have any questions about it. As usual I offer this code for example purposes only. I have only tested it on an SGI under the circumstances I need it for. I hold no claims on its reliablity on other platforms or other needs.
