Hello, Sorry about the delay - I was on vacation last week. At this point during initialization the server is failing to open /dev/null. Check the permissions of /dev/null and see if there would be a problem opening it read/write. As for Slackware96 we have no experience with it. The AOLserver was ported and tested on RedHat 3.03 with the 2.0 kernel upgrade from the www.redhat.com Web site. What I would like is a TCL command which returns the raw TCP connection data stream WITHOUT any processing... just read in the all the bytes and store somewhere (preferably into a disk file, given that TCL is unable to manipulate binary data by means of variables). ns_writecontents seems to do the work, but it skips the HTTP headers and stores only the body of the HTTP request; therefore it DOES data processing. -= MarCo =- ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 4 Sep 1996 08:37:15 -0400 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost Sender: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost From: John Nielsen Subject: backing up database In-Reply-To: <199609040400.AAA28078@services.web.aol.com> from "Automatic digest processor" at Sep 4, 96 00:00:28 am MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In the docs, you mention that one has to use the illustra backup program in order to backup the databases because illustra keeps things in memory. Try this (untested): set temp [ns_tmpnam] set fp [open $temp w+] ns_writecontent $conn $fp seek $fp 0 set content [read $fp] close $fp ns_unlink $temp ... do something with $content ... This works if called *before* ns_conn form. The first time you call ns_conn form the content is sucked in from the client and chopped up into the form set. Note that ns_writecontent works with a file because the content could be binary (Tcl only works with strings; the example above assumes string data). This is an interesting response to what seems to me to be a real AOL site maintenance problem. In general, when you labor long and hard to make things work in a consistent and predictable fashion, you certainly don't want or expect column assignments to move right out from under you; both without your concurrance or knowledge. Anyway, for those of you who responded, thanks for your insight. For those you have hosted sites and haven't had resequencing occur, then it appears that you will have to plan ahead, because for the time being, AOL seems to be the only game in town. The common denominator from your feedback seems to be that the resequencing occurs when AOL does some sort of site maintenance. Although it doesn't appear that this is always consistent, the results of this site maintenance is reversing of your columns. For example, if your table columns were defined: (1) partNumber, (2) unitPrice, (3) partDescription, (4) dateStamp prior to AOL site maintenance or conversion, your resulting columns will be (1) dateStamp, (2) partDescription, (3) unitPrice, and (4) partNumber. Of course this doesn't make any difference if you have your forms hardcoded. The rub comes when you select all, or some subset of these columns to produce a dynamic search result page. Now you have the result columns in the reversed sequence. In every sql schema definition language of which I am familiar, columns are defined in table creates not only in terms of column names and attributes, but also in column definition sequence. And in every sql variation of which I am aware, column sequences don't change. Indeed, some sql languages, i.e., DB2, commonly SELECT * into a hardcoded record definition. This would naturally blow sky high if the column resequencing changed. Since Commercial hosted sites have so many limitations as to what is available to you to use, and since there is no published schedule as to when AOL plans to do maintenance or conversions, our ability to know when this occurs and when it will become necessary to take corrective action currently sits squarely on the shoulders of site developers. In my opinion, I strongly suggest that AOL assume full and complete responsibility to maintain our sites in the fashion in which they were designed. It seems rather strange, if not silly, to have to say this, but apparently it is necessary. The only way I can imagine that these columns are resequenced is with some sort of automated process which reads our table schema(s) and regenerates a new schema for conversion to another Illustra version, without regard to the original table sequence. If this is the case, and I think it likely, then it would seem to be a fairly simple code change for a resolution of this problem. At this point, if AOL does not take immediate corrective action to resolve this, I will be left to hardcode all pages which rely on predictable column sequences. This is not something I am looking forward to doing. I don't hate TCL, but then I haven't grown to love it either. I really enjoyed some of the comments I received to my earlier submission. Thanks to you of the silent majority. You don't get IQT (NT graphical interface) and instead of msql (character-mode utility) you get nsql which is crippled as it won't execute commands: create type create aggregate create function and some others. Illustra supports joins but not outer joins (at least I didn't find anything about them in their documentation). >Also, I second the request for a list of differences between the >version of Illustra we're using and the real McCoy. I love that >it's free, but I'd also like to know what I have. :) The Illustra binaries distributed with AOLserver are identical to the real versions. In fact, we simply extract the binaries from Illustra's tapes and disks and repackage them for download. What is different are the licenses. Ordinary Illustra customers install platform specific licenses which end up as small files in the adm or key Illustra directory, one numbered file for each "feature". For example, the core Illustra server is feature number 00 and the Text Datablade if feature number 01. We instead include platform independent 11000-series licenses in the distributions. These licenses are numbered like the ordinary ones except they start at 11000 instead of 0. For example, 11000 is for the core server and 11001 is for the Text Datablade. Only the AOLserver and the nsql command line program can connect to Illustra using these 11000 series keys; ordinary Illustra applications such as msql or iqt32 fail to connect and return a license manager error. Once connected, however, the actual running database server is identical to that provided by Illustra. There are a few catches. First, our licensing agreement with Illustra prohibits you from using their libmi API and a set of Illustra-specific SQL verbs including: close fetch open recover create aggregate create cast create function create operator create type create version declare cursor Basically, the lack of these verbs keep you from using cursors, the transaction-level log, or extend Illustra with your own C or SQL server functions. The idea was that you would get a fully functional SQL relational database but the prospect of these fancy features and libmi would entice you to upgrade to the full version (which, aside from the chunk of money we paid them up front, is what Illustra was after in the first place). The verb restrictions are actually enforced by nsql which will print a helpful message when you attempt to use one, for example: * create function; >>> create function <<< : The function you requested is only available on a general use license of the Illustra server (you have purchased a limited-use license). Please contact Illustra at 510.652.8000, or email sales@illustra.com to receive information on how you may upgrade your server license. * Second, because msql and iqt32 can't connect to Illustra with the 11000-series licenses, none of the Illustra administration scripts they provide (midump, vacuum, etc.) work. Instead you have to use nsql and the SQL statements directly (which normally isn't too bad). Another consequence of not having msql is that you can't install the Text datablade into an existing Illustra database like ordinary Illustra customers. Instead, you must create a new database using a database dump file downloaded from our site (one of those "textdb" dumps). Finally, because you don't own a general purpose license it's not clear that you can buy additional blades to use with the AOLserver. For example, I'm not sure if Illustra will sale you a license to say, the Image blade, to run with AOLserver without first buying an ordinary server license. They have wavered on this point in the past and if you're interested you'll have to talk to them directly. If you do purchase a blade, be sure they give you an 11000-series and not a 0-series license. This will likely confuse them so be patient. Also, you won't be able to install any new blades without at least a temporary 00 license because blades are installed with msql or iqt32. In summary: 1. The Illustra downloaded from www.aolserver.com includes the same binaries as the regular Illustra server. 2. The licenses are 11000-series instead of ordinary 0-series and only AOLserver and nsql can utilize these licenses. 3. You are not allowed to use their API or a set of verbs used to extend the server in fancy Illustra-ways. 4. The lack of msql and iqt32 complicates administration somewhat and you may not be able to buy individual Illustra blades without first purchasing a full Illustra server license. I hope this clears up all the confusion. The first error message indicates that the CGI program died from signal 13 which is SIGPIPE. This means the process tried to read from a pipe with no writers or write to a pipe with no readers which shouldn't happen unless your CGI does something weird. Specifically, stdout is a pipe to the AOLserver and stderr is duped to the server.log. For stdin, on a POST it's a temp file with the content and on a GET it's duped from an fd which is always open on /dev/null (the same fd, in fact, which was giving you trouble being opened at startup before, right?). You can force stdin to be an empty file instead by enabling Debug mode, i.e.: [ns\server\server1\cgi] debug=1 In this case the server will create an empty file for input and will copy any output to another file (the files will be something like /usr/tmp/cgiInNNN and /usr/tmp/cgiOutNNN). If this stops the problem than there must be something still weird with /dev/null on your system. Before you dive in, please note that not all SQLs support outer joins and those that do don't always support all the forms of outer join." The Illustra docs has this for the Select statement: select [unique | distinct] select_list from from_list [using suggestion_list] [where search_condition] [group by expression [, expression ... ]] [having search_condition] [order by order_spec] [union [all] select_statement] So it appears that Illustra doesn't support outer joins. > > Jim > > > Jeff Gustafson wrote: > > > > On Mon, 9 Sep 1996, Jim Wilcoxson wrote: > > > > > This may sound stupid, but does the crippled version of Illustra > > > distributed with GNN server support joins? This is called an inner join and frequently causes confusion since fewer rows are returned than the user expects. For example, tables english and spanish look like this: * select * from english; * select * from spanish; ----------------------------- ----------------------------- |tag |name | |tag |name | ----------------------------- ----------------------------- |1 |one | |2 |dos | |2 |two | |3 |tres | |3 |three | |4 |cuatro | ----------------------------- ----------------------------- 3 rows selected 3 rows selected When you join these two tables, you get only the two rows that have the same tag: * select e.name, e.tag, s.name from english e, spanish s where e.tag = s.tag; ------------------------------------------- |name |tag |name | ------------------------------------------- |two |2 |dos | |three |3 |tres | ------------------------------------------- 2 rows selected Row one in table english and row cuatro in table spanish fall into the outer joins: Joins +--------------+ left outer ---> | one 1 | | +--------------+ +--> | two | 2 : dos | inner join | | | : | +--> | three | 3 : tres | +--------|- - -+ | | 4 cuatro| <--- right outer +--------------+ You can select outer join rows by using not exists. AOLserver typically cleans up pathnames and turns double slashes into single slashes. It's just one place where we don't address an NT-ism. However, you can map a network drive to a DOS drive letter and then use the mapped drive just fine, for example: net use Z: \\zap\c nsd -fc z:\aolserver\nsd.ini Of coure this only works from a command line prompt - when started as a service NT just starts nsd directly. But here's a little secret: This is the source code to nsd.exe: extern __declspec(dllimport) void ns_main(int, argv **); main(int argc, char **argv) { ns_main(argc, argv); } That's it! All it does is call ns_main in the nsd.dll. So, you could try writting a new nsd.exe like this: #include extern __declspec(dllimport) void ns_main(int, argv **); main(int argc, char **argv) { WNetAddConnection("\\\\zap\\c", "mypassword", "z:"); ns_main(argc, argv); } and compiling it like this (assuming you have Visual C++): cl /MD nsd.c mpr.lib nsd.lib and then set up your AOLserver service in the NT Control Panel to Log On as you instead of the system account. The end result is NT will execute your new nsd.exe as you which will first map the drive before calling ns_main. A bit weird, but it worked for me. The person that wrote the proxy server in question showed me in the HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1 spec where it says there are not supposed to be spaces in the URL (as well as some other characters). This meant that if you did a gets on a socket which read in all the data and then waited for the next line, the socket wouldn't be readable but in fact gets would have data waiting in the FILE buffer. The next release of AOLserver (which should be later today!) will have this fix. The new ns_socknread command can also be used to check for bytes available to read on a particular socket. You can see it in use in the new http.tcl script which showed up in 2.1b8. >If you'd like to put this in the Developer Corner it's fine with >me, but remember to uncomment the debug line. I'd like to write a Tcl script that reads in the information from a CSV (comma-separated text file containing database rows) and returns it as a list. I have a few doubts, and maybe you can help me: a) Each element of the returned list would be a sub-list containing a complete row. Each element of this sub-list would be a value. A simple example of this, assuming a database with three fields (name, age and phone number): { {john 21 555-3321} {peter 34 331-5782} {mary 29 221-3129} {julia 45 234-1236} {mark 31 126-3516} } Do you think this is a good approach? I've seen that Tcl can manage arrays, but I don't know if these arrays can be two-dimensional or just vectors. (Actually, I've never worked with arrays in Tcl at all). b) I was thinking about a procedure that takes two arguments: one of them is a pathname to the text file, the other is a numeric "number-of-fields" value so that the procedure knows how many columns to expect in each row and doesn't have to figure that out by itself. Does this sound reasonable to you? c) The actual algorithm should be something like: 1) while we haven't reached EOF, get a line of text <------ | 2) look for a double quote (") and discard it <--- | 3) read in text until you find another double quote | | 4) append that text to a list and discard the quote | | 5) if there is a comma (,) discard it and start again -- | | 6) append the list we just read to another list | 7) start again with a new line ------- This seems easy to do, but now I see that the "read" command only reads in the *complete* content of a file! (or a specific number of bytes, which doesn't help because a particular line can be longer or shorter than another particular line). Is there no command to read in a text file line-by-line? If not, what do you think I should do? Which option is more efficient, reading in the whole chunk'o data and post-processing the Tcl variable, or reading one byte at a time until I find the linefeed and process the line? d) Maybe I'm reinventing the wheel here. If someone knows about or has developed some sort of routine to read in CSV files, please let me know! (And if you happen to have a routine that will also add rows to an Illustra table with that data, it would be even better!) I can learn a lot from your code if you are willing to share it. Thanks in advance. Probably the most interesting function in there is the ns_getcsv command, which is actually implemented in C. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Jason - Yes, I have had exactly the same problem on exactly the same configuration (with more free disk space). For no apparent reason, gnn 2.033 would stop answering requests (all virtual servers). There was nothing peculiar in the logs when this occurred. It happened twice, but I have almost zero load on my server. After the first time I set a 120 second time-out in the socket module, but the problem still occurred once after that. I recently upgraded to 2.1b8 and have not seen the problem (yet), but like I said, my server has no load. I agree with you that this isn't script related, because the two times mine hung was when no one was using the machine, plus ALL virtual servers stopped and a couple don't even have scripts. If the problem occurs again with 2.1 I'll be sure to post a message. Jim Jason Y. Chiang wrote: > > Does anybody experience from time to time that virtual servers stop for no > reason? I've known about AOLServer ever since is was in beta as NaviServer, but never had the chance to set it up until recently. Right now I am running AOLServer version 2.1 under WindowsNT 3.51 on a 486 dx2 66mhz with 24 megs of RAM. I installed AOLServer before we even had our internet connection online, using "fake" IP's (didn't know what they were going to be) and "fake" hostnames, which have all changed since we got the line up. After changing all the IP's and hostnames and such throughout the server, the one small problem I'm having is our hostname is not registered to the IP yet, so when the server tries a DNS lookup for itself, it comes up blank and doesn't work quite right. This should be fixed by the end of the week, when we get our DNS service online and configured. (If you would like to check it out, it is 199.201.78.194, the hostname will be nhs.neenah.k12.wi.us and www.nhs.neenah.k12.wi.us). (If you are wondering, this is a high school, that's why we have such a long hostname, it has to be geographical.) BIG PROBLEM..... The big problem I'm having is when restarting the service remotely. During installation I renamed the AOLServer service to NJSDWebServer. I can manually restart the service via command line, or through the Services control panel, but the Restart Server form keeps wanting to restart the service AOLServer, which gives an invalid handle, because it doesn't exist. Ideally, I'd like to get Remote Restart working with the renamed service (NJSDWebServer), if that's something I can put into some configuration file somewhere. If not, I'd like to know how to rename the service itself back to AOLServer. Always trying to restart "AOLserver" was a known bug which was fixed in the final release. Anyway, to remove a service use: nsd -r -s and then to install: nsd -i -c -s You can restart any service on the command line (or in a batch file) with: nsd -R -s In the examples above, if the "-s " isn't specified the service defaults to "AOLserver". Every couple of days, the NT system runs low on virtual memory and the server starts to give server errors, presumably because the ODBC driver can't get any work space. The machine has 32Mb of RAM and the site it is running is not a high-access one (probably about 1000 hits/day, mostly plain HTTP, some SELECTs and a few INSERT/DELETEs). Does the ODBC driver set, or GNN 2.033 have any memory leaks? Has anyone else had similar problems? What did you do? I am about to upgrade to AOLserver 2.1 as soon as I have ported the few bits that were 2.0 specific - will this help? Also, I would consider moving to Illustra if the benefits (speed/reliability) if any, outweigh the disadvantage of not being able to get at the data like I can through Access. We see this with NaviServer 2.0 and AOLServer 2.033 on Solaris 2.4. A while back I posted to this list that if I used Sun's Proctool to examine the memory map of the nsd process, that Proctool will immediately dump core with a SIGSEGV segmentation violation. Nsd is the only process I have ever been able to reproduce this with using proctool. I don't know what could possibly cause proctool to die just by looking at the memory map, and sense it dies before it displays any info, I can't see what is in the map. The only response I got to my earlier post was to upgrade to (at the time) GNN Server 2.033. We finally got the AOL 2.033 release, but I have the same problem with proctool and there still appears to be a leak. I have a suspicion that it may possibly be in the nsill module, but I have no way to verify that. For example two servers running on the same machine (two separate processes, not two virtual servers), one which accesses an Illustra Database, and one that does no db access: Output from '/usr/ucb/ps -aux' : USER PID %CPU %MEM SZ RSS TT S START TIME COMMAND nsadmin 23797 0.0 10.9 10452 3344 ? S Jul 23 26:08 bin/nsd -c nsd.ini The server with no db access has been running since July 23 (300-400 hits/day) and has not grown in size while the other server has grown several megs since September 5. This is a low volume server, and servers with heavier usage can get quite large on total memory allocation while the resident set size (RSS) stays relatively small. Hello, I normally use something like this: if ![info exists _my_stuff] { set _my_stuff(this) ... set _my_stuff(that) ... set _my_stuff(id) [ns_schedule_ ...] } The first time around the _my_stuff array doesn't exist and so it's initialized and the procedure is scheduled. Using an array for each extension like this works well because typically extensions requires a few global variables (a mutex, open file, etc.) and grouping them all together keeps things nice and tidy. Variables in a procedure are automatically freed when the procedure returns. However, memory for a global variable is not freed until it is set to a new value or explicitly unset. In this case the "tcl" variable is a global variable and it's unset because there's no need for it to hang around. Actually, the unset is not all that necessary - the memory is likely to be a drop in the bucket. It seems to be pretty stable and I think I have closed most of the security holes but there are some out there and I made note of the ones that I know of. In breif the whole idea behind this is so that you can allow your server users to FTP files into the server (I have a few that refuse to learn AOLPress) without giving them normal logins or worrying about them poking about your filesystem. In the DB admin package where you can customize tables, if you are using a page which is intended to be parsed (.shtml) as a templete for entry, results etc, the page in fact does not get parsed. Parsed HTML works fine in all other cases. I can see that the template handling is kind of different to all other page handling from a server point of view since you are replacing a gif with a form or other text. However it seems you have forgotten to parse the HTMl in shtml style also. Hmm. Ok. But I want to keep all my internal links relative so that I can easily move the web to different hosts. I.e, we are implementing an intranet solution and are regularly upgrading the WEB server at our customer with new stuff from our development server. You see the problem? Absolute links are a problem. If you wanted to send stuff on the same connection you can do that by not closing the connection and just sending some text down the line. That text will display at the bottom with more arriving text appending what the browser sees. If, on the other hand you wanted to erase the browser's screen and put something else on it, you can try client-side pull. Have the browser retrieve a URL every 5 seconds, for example. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" This query comes from a person who is using a virtual host on my server (GNN 2.033 on Solaris 2.5): From the GNNserver documentation it looks like there is a single server-wide authorization file (or "user" file), and that you then control access to subsets of your server with subsets of users by putting users into groups or listing user names explicitly in the server configuration. I have CGI-based Web conferencing software that needs its own separate authorization file that it can maintain itself, so that users can register with usernames and passwords without administrator intervention. The software adds and removes user names from the authorization file itself. Ideally this file should be in DBM format rather than flat, for efficiency with large numbers of users. With the NCSA or Apache servers, you'd do something like this: AuthType Basic AuthUserFile /users/foo/data/passwd DBM AuthName Motet require valid-user An equivalent thing is possible with the Netscape servers as well. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 24 Sep 1996 14:38:40 -0800 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost Sender: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost From: "Robert A. We are interested in getting the image datablade and so are pursuing a license to the core server. Illustra kindly told us that we would need to purchase development licenses and deployment license. They really want to sell us the $40,000 unlimited web server Deployment license, along with several Development Licenses. The $40,000 unlimited web server Deployment license will allow an unlimited number of connections to the database. When I explained that we have been using the wonderful AOLserver that comes bundled with a limited license to the core server, they said we will probaly need more than one conncurrent user license to really do anything. Here's the question that Illustra/Informix couldn't (or, wouldn't) answer: How many concurrent connections does the AOLserver-bundled Illustra core server support/allow? Is it more than 1? Is there a need for more than one connection? How many simultaneous connections is adequate? How does one calculate need in this case? We are very close to making a purchase, but we are troubled by the lack of clarity on this issue. Can anyone add details?? best regards Buddy >In summary: > >1. And just out of >curiosity, what does NS_ERROR mean? Hello, Yes - this was fixed in the final release of AOLserver 2.1. The message you were seeing was the AOLserver communications layer reporting that a communictaions driver (normally nssock or nsssl) returned NS_ERROR when the driver's accept (or wait-for-new-connection) function was called. A driver shouldn't return NS_ERROR unless something really weird happens. In this case the driver was returning NS_ERROR if a client initiated and then immediately dropped a connection which is rare but possible. Solaris in particular handles this case poorly. The final release cathes this error - the driver simply waits for the next connection. However, if you run it through a web client, one gets the error that the URL cannot be found. Other cgi programs run fine from the same directory, and the wrapper is getting executed and what it is exec'ing is in the same directory. Is there any way to find out what url cannot be found? The log doesn't say and even a trace of nsadmin's system calls doesn't reveal it. You probably don't need that many, but you might very well want more than one. You can set the number of simultaneous connections AOLserver will open in your database pool definition. Some operations (such as nested select statements, for example) require multiple database handles. Exactly how many you want probably depends on your application (an on how much Illustra is charging...). Thanks. -Jim Running "top" shows one NSD process in a CPU loop, all others idle: # ps -ef|grep nsd nsadmin 18081 18080 0 Sep 19 ? 0:01 /u/gnn/bin/nsd -ic /u/gnn/nsd.ini -b4 nsadmin 26438 18081 80 01:50:58 ? 930:35 /u/gnn/bin/nsd -ic /u/gnn/nsd.ini -b4 root 18079 1 0 Sep 19 ? 0:00 /u/gnn/bin/nsd -ic /u/gnn/nsd.ini nsadmin 18084 18081 0 Sep 19 ? 0:01 /u/gnn/bin/nsd -ic /u/gnn/nsd.ini -b4 nsadmin 18083 18081 0 Sep 19 ? 0:12 /u/gnn/bin/nsd -ic /u/gnn/nsd.ini -b4 nsadmin 18080 18079 0 Sep 19 ? 0:00 /u/gnn/bin/nsd -ic /u/gnn/nsd.ini -b4 root 26924 26839 1 17:42:22 pts/0 0:00 grep nsd # Here are the active TCP connections: # netstat -t Active Internet connections Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state) tcp 0 0 localhost.20397 localhost.sunrpc TIME_WAIT tcp 0 0 localhost.20395 localhost.sunrpc TIME_WAIT tcp 0 0 localhost.20393 localhost.sunrpc TIME_WAIT tcp 0 0 localhost.20391 localhost.sunrpc TIME_WAIT tcp 171 0 www.careerplaza..80 nt.1965 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 www.telnet nt.1800 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 www.7531 www.19904 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 www.19904 www.7531 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 www.7531 www.19891 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 www.19891 www.7531 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 www.quickrent.co.80 *.* LISTEN tcp 0 0 www.80 *.* LISTEN tcp 0 0 www.faxit.com.80 *.* LISTEN tcp 0 0 www.careerplaza..80 *.* LISTEN udp 0 0 localhost.ntp *.* udp 0 0 www.ntp *.* udp 0 0 localhost.domain *.* udp 0 0 www.domain * ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 12:33:40 +0100 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost Sender: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost From: Filippo Niccolini Organization: Intecs Sistemi S.p.A. - Sede di Pisa Subject: Problems in setting up AOLserver to Illustra connection MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi, I have just subscribed to the AOLServer Developers Group, and have a question to anyone who has some AOLServer/Illustra Database experience. We are testing our AOL server connection to Illustra DB by using the examples provided in the Tcl Tutorial section (Example 4: Interacting with the Database) of the AOL server documentation. Unfortunately, we are constantly facing with an error message saying: invalid command name "ns_db" while executing "ns_db gethandle $pool" invoked from within "set db [ns_db gethandle $pool]..." (procedure "describetable" line 10) invoked from within "describetable nsc29 {}" We tried to execute such a function also from the interactive Tcl Evaluation page, but we receive the similar message saying that "ns_db" is an invalid command. Our AOLserver is running on a Win95 machine, and the Illustra server runs on a Sun Solaris 2.5 machine. We already received some help from the AOL technical people who identify the problem with the fact that the nsdb.dll module is not installed in our AOLserver installation. We verified and indeed this module does not appear to be linked to our virtual servers although we performed all the suggestd steps to install the database pools. We performed the DB pools installation again, but when creating a new virtual server, the Add Virtual Server pages did not show a selection button for adding the nsdb.dll module. Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Any help will be really appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- Filippo Niccolini \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ( @ @ ) ----------------ooO---( )---Ooo--------------------- + + + GOOD IDEAS HIDE TERRIFICS ONES + + . _ /_ _ _ + + / / / / /_/ / _ + + /_ / / /_ /_ /_ /_ Sistemi S.p.A. + + _/ + + + + Via Gereschi 32-34 + + 56127 PISA ITALY + + + + Phone : +39 50 54 52 90 + + Fax : +30 50 54 52 00 + + e-mail: filippo.niccolini@pisa.intecs.it + + WWW : http://www.pisa.intecs.it/ + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 08:40:21 -0400 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost Sender: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost From: "Peter M. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I was working with two servers, trying to make as transparent as possible the switch to the new one, so I created the following procedure: ns_register_proc GET / server_move proc server_move {c i} { ns_returnredirect $conn "http://new.server.thing[ns_conn url $c]" } Then I sent it to the wrong server. To try to right things, I was able to evaluate the following TCL: ns_unregister_proc GET / but now I can't get any static pages off the server because they all complain that there's no procedure registered to handle "GET /whatever". How do I fix this? Pete. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 12:59:19 -0800 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost Sender: Web Development with AOLserver and PrimeHost From: Alex Khassin Organization: Intecs Sistemi S.p.A. - Sede di Pisa Subject: Re: Problems in setting up AOLserver to Illustra connection In-Reply-To: <324FB014.63B@pisa.intecs.it> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="=_30tW20g.bO1996u.N20d000A.r09Y.59:002256" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit --=_30tW20g.bO1996u.N20d000A.r09Y.59:002256 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >Unfortunately, we are constantly facing with an error message saying: > >invalid command name "ns_db" > while executing > "ns_db gethandle $pool" > invoked from within > "set db [ns_db gethandle $pool]..." > (procedure "describetable" line 10) > invoked from within > "describetable nsc29 {}" Sounds like Extended Table Attributes problem.
