Subject: FTP Server using the AOLServer Permissions
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII

Hi all,
I just recently finished a FTP server that uses the AOLServer
permissions scheme on top of the Unix permissions. Sorry all you NT guys
because of some of the execs I use this doesn't work on NT as I wrote it,
but it is possible if you wanted to tinker with the execs you could make
it do so. This server is written entirely in Tcl with only one additional
funtion written in C. If you don't want an FTP server this is a good
basis for almost any RFC server daemon (i.e. SMTP). Also it is a good
source for examples using the various sockets and Threads functions in
the 2.1 Tcl interfaces. I've been testing it over the last few weeks to
make sure it worked with the popular FTP Clients that I know of: WS_FTP
for Windows, Fetch for the Mac, Command line FTP for both Unix and NT. To
the best of my knowledge it supports all the standard commands and a good
portion of the extended commands. I wrote this in accordance with the FTP
RFCs and it fully complies with, and sometimes exceeds, their minimum
guidlines for this to be classified as a working FTP server with all the
needed commands.
If you want to take a look at it, its at my dev site:
http://www.deadend.org/dev/dci_ftp.html.

Enjoy,
Dave

Hello,

I have posted several queries about the problem of
restoring template1. It is making me nervous that
no one has anything to say ... I hope its
just because the answer is so obvious.

Can anyone on the list tell me if the newer AOL releases support
Cookies?

I know this is more of a client side question, but I don't know

Thanks in advance

Subject: ~ in web addresses

I know this is a basic question, but it has had me stumped for several
months now (obviously not that important). How do I "map" the ~ to the
front of a username to go to their home page (automatically created during
user creation). For instance:
I want
http://nhs.njsd.org/~saturn/
to go to
http://nhs.njsd.org/users/s/saturn/
I would like this for all the users, and I don't want to have to do it for
every user individually. The manual mentioned it, but not in great detail,
and I can't get it to work.

Subject: Form handling CGI's

I am looking for a CGI of some sort that will handle POST forms. On a
NetBSD computer, I have used a little perl script called mailform.cgi
that simply takes the post and e-mails it, using unix sendmail. I
realize this script won't work on my Windows NT 3.51 server due to the
fact there is no sendmail command. Is there a script or program of some
sort that will do this through AOLserver 2.1? Does anybody have any
utility that will do anything with a POST form? (it will be used for a
simple survey, nothing elaborate.)

Otherwise, I will be forced to reference my friend's mailform.cgi
running on NetBSD.

Thanks,

I seem to recall seeing in the AOL list a member that was starting a web

Could the address please be posted again or could somebody list an address
for CGI/TCL examples that would work on AOLserver please. I have been to the
AOLexample page but it is getting pretty old

Hello,

Is it possible to have a random access to rows that

set row [ns_db select $db $sql]

will return?

This is different from

"ns_db getrow $db $row"

since getrow returns them in sequential order, one by one until no more
rows are in there.

I need to pull out a row that is randomly selected from that list.
Consequently, I need to get a number of rows that select has returned ahead
of time, so that the range for the random number generator routine can be set.

Any help highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Voja.

Hello all.

As I'm sure some of you have noticed, there has been a lapse recently in
postings to the list, and this is due to the fact that they have been
piling up on the server here while I have been busy. I am now getting
everything back in order, and the posts should be heading back out now.
Also, there were a few posts lost due to problems with the server, and I
was able to get most of them back... however I believe that there were
about 5-10 that I was not able to save, and so if you do not see your
post within the next few days, please repost it.

Once again, I appologize for the lapse, but everything should be back in
order.

Thanks.

Subject: ns_quotehtml needs to quote double quotes too
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

The TCL function ns_quotehtml needs to also quote the double quote
character. If you say something like:
set data [ns_set get $row fieldname]
then later use $data as the default value of an input field:
ns_return ...

this will fail if $data contains a double quote character. I realize
the main use for ns_quotehtml is to escape <, >, and & when generating
HTML on the fly, but it would work well for this problem too if it also
escaped the double quote.

I looked around for the TCL source to ns_quotehtml, but couldn't find
it. Is it an internal C function? Can I hack it somehow without
resorting to rewriting it in TCL and having to do:
regsub: change all & to &
regsub: change all < to <
regsub: change all > to >
regsub: change all " to "
for every field I display.

Thanks for your time, and I want to mention AOLSERVER 2.1 IS AWESOME !!

Just as a suggestion, maybe when the API expands in future versions,
there could be a better distinction between new "primitive" functions
that really extend capabilities (like the ns_sock functions) vs.
helper/utility functions (like ns_dbquotevalue) that are just shorthand
for a relatively trivial task. Maybe just grouping some of the utility
functions together (like all of the functions dealing with
creating/processing forms data) or adding a new prefix (ut_...) would
help. I'd hate to see what has been a very clean, lean API turn into a
messy one that you're then stuck supporting for existing customers.

Jim
