AOLserver talks to Illustra via the nsill.dll driver (and not via nsext.dll and proxy daemon nsillpd.exe). 2 months ago I started to have sporadic and intermittent AOLserver-Illustra connection problems. All of a sudden, Illustra does not accept new client connections (i.e. AOLserver pool connections; you may know that AOLserver drops the connections if unused for a while), not from AOLserver nor from NSQL. I have GNNserver 2.033 running on the same AOLserver's machine and using the same database, but, since GNNserver does not drop connections and keeps them open, as far as I leave it running, it doesn't show problems (i.e. Illustra responds on the connections already established). Restarting the Illustra box resolves the problem, but obviously this is not the desired business. As far as I can tell, everything is setup correctly. I think I understand the implications involved in running the db server on another machine, the miparams file is correct etc... Because Illustra seems to respond well on the already opened connections, but it does not accept new connections, I pointed my attention to the infamous ELM daemon, wich authorizes new connection inquiries based on the license keys installed. The file Illustra\adm\license.log does not give really useful clues... perhaps aside from a strange "invalid client" message... ........................................................... Does anybody know the precise meaning of that "Invalid client, pid=112/10." message? Since usually I'm not physically present on the machines site, and cannot continuosly monitor the db responsiveness, it's difficult to check whether the times of the failures are coinciding with the logged "invalid client" events. I'm planning to write a small TCL script wich checks continously for database reachability, but, given that this would keep the pool connections forever open, I guess I should make it check at intervals of 30 minutes or more (from the server.log, it seems AOLserver drops connections after around 20 mins of no db activity [the infamous "DB Stale" message]). Does anyone know whether it is possible to instruct AOLserver to not drop the db pool connections? (moreover, this would avoid the time expensive reconnection events) Four days ago, I upgraded Illustra from 3.1 to 3.2, and, for the moment, this seems to have resolved the issue (fingers crossed). But I feel uncertain because I can't explain what happened. ------------------------------------------------------------ -= MarCo =- PGP public key: finger marco.coletti@mail.bearnet.it http://www.pgp.net/cgi-bin/pks-extract-key.pl?op=index&search=0x96A79061 http://www.es.net/cgi-bin/pgp.pl?userid=0x96A79061 Fingerprint: 9F E5 80 61 F6 9F 05 2D EA 53 6F 2D 82 8B C7 C2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 31 Mar 1997 10:28:30 +0100 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver Sender: Web Development with AOLserver From: Marco Coletti Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Running AOLserver 2.1 on NT 3.51 sp4 - Pentium 166 64MB RAM Trying NETSTAT -a from command line, I discovered that when AOLserver service is running there are three TCP connections between the machine and itself. If the remote server is AOLserver, with AOLpress you can simply copy a local file to a remote URL. Alternatively, it should be possible to implement HTTP file upload receive in TCL on AOLserver (I'm speaking of the Netscape Navigator HTML form file upload capability), but I think it's very difficult because the file uploaded through an HTML form must be parsed to remove the MIME delimiters and, AFAIK, TCL cannot handle binary data (suppose for example you want to upload a .zip file...). But if you stick with text files, you should be safe. See http://www.deadend.org/dev/tcl/get_multi.txt (http://www.deadend.org/dev/index.html) for a TCL implementation of this (credit given to David Whittle). ------------------------------------------------------------ -= MarCo =- PGP public key: finger marco.coletti@mail.bearnet.it http://www.pgp.net/cgi-bin/pks-extract-key.pl?op=index&search=0x96A79061 http://www.es.net/cgi-bin/pgp.pl?userid=0x96A79061 Fingerprint: 9F E5 80 61 F6 9F 05 2D EA 53 6F 2D 82 8B C7 C2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 04:25:00 +0200 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver Sender: Web Development with AOLserver From: Gaute Amundsen Subject: Error: WaitForMiServer??!! At that time the AOLserver postgres db connector was working fine, but the SQL backend was not as robust and I dropped it in favor of the Illustra proxy db connector. Since that time there have been alot of questions about the state of this trio of apps. Here is some of my notes recompiling the latest version of Postgres v6 and Linux 2.0.?? with AOLserver 2.1 and the postgres.so db connector that came with that distribution. 1. The first thing I ran into was related to 1.4 in the Linux specific FAQ. It was necessary to pull the A4 disk of Slackware96 and install /usr/include/dlfcn.h, make the appropriate links for the DLL, and rebuild the ld.so cache with "ldconfig". That allowed the a clean compile of Postgres. 2. Next a change in authentication schemes from previous verisions of Postgres led to this discovery and affects those who might be using a configuration like: DataSource=myhostname:5432:mydbname if myhostname = localhost you are fine if myhostname = a specific host then you might run into an authentication problem. From depths of the Postgres Backend source it reads: left, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out left, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, outA message type of STARTUP_MSG (which once upon a time was the only startup message type) means user wants us to choose. "unauth" is left, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, outwhat used to be the only choice, but installation may choose "hba" instead. What this means is that you must put an entry in the /usr/local/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf to allow your host "myhostname" permission to connect to "mydbname" . So, watch out for this. 3. The driver loads and connects to database I created as the 'postgres superuser' and it makes through the authentication and forks off a postgres backend and dies in a library module Error: Ns_PgOpenDb(postgres): Could not connect to myhostname:5432:mydbname: connectDB() -- fdopen() failed: errno=4 Interrupted system call I tracked it to the Frontend library source fe-connect.c /* set up the socket file descriptors */ conn->Pfout = fdopen(port->sock, "w"); conn->Pfin = fdopen(dup(port->sock), "r"); if (!conn->Pfout || !conn->Pfin) { (void) sprintf(conn->errorMessage, "connectDB() -- fdopen() failed: errno=%d\n%s\n", errno, strerror(errno)); goto connect_errReturn; } conn->port = port; return CONNECTION_OK; connect_errReturn: return CONNECTION_BAD; 4. I tried to recompile of the postgres.so module using the following makefile modifications for the postgres.so db connector with similar results. OBJS=postgres.o MODULE=postgres.so CFLAGS= -I$(NSHOME)/include -I/usr/local/pgsql/include $(COPTS) LDFLAGS=-shared all: $(MODULE) $(MODULE): $(OBJS) ld $(LDFLAGS) -o $(MODULE) $(OBJS) /usr/local/pgsql/lib/libpq.a It should be noted that the Postgres psql and the regression tests seem to work fine. Also, alot of my debugging was done by adding -d 3 to postmaster's startup command line which is inherited by the forked off postgres backends. Very useful stuff. We have always had a few things that just have never worked correctly with our current configuration of Linux and AOLserver. Those being 1) An I/O problem with CGI (also know as the "illegal seek" problem). The solution was to rewrite any Perl scripts in AOL Tcl which is a big plus. 2) An I/O problem with ns_sendmail which writes directly to port 25. The work around was to use a version which piped stuff off to sendmail (1). 3) And now an I/O problem in the libpq-fe which I currently do not have a solution for. Although there is a trend here, I'm treat each problem individually. However, I'd still like to know if others with the "illegal seek" CGI problem also experience these other two symptoms. Moreover, has anyone successfully achieved nirvana with Redhat 4.1? This is a pending direction we were going to take. Never the less, I hope these notes assist someone with problems they currently might be having. Actually thats not entirely true. My upload script does infact handle binary data, that was the main reason I built it. The deal is that you have to spool your form data into a temp file and you can manipulate the binary data via file pointers. If you try to read it into a variable it will get messed up though. The way my script works is, it spits the data on the floor and reads until it comes across the attached file header(s). Then it scans ahead to find the end, seeks back to the begining of the binary and spits it all into a second file and stores that file name in the ns_set as if it were the data submit via the form. > See http://www.deadend.org/dev/tcl/get_multi.txt > (http://www.deadend.org/dev/index.html) for a TCL implementation of this > (credit given to David Whittle). CGI on AOLserver 2.1 is working! http://www.magnets.com/cgi-bin/CGIDebug Rob, our Linux wiz, uncover a related news posting about the latest Netscape not working with a particular version of Linux libc. Here's how we finally got it to work: #Start Naviserver LD_PRELOAD=$LIB/deprecated/libc.so.5.0.9 export LD_PRELOAD $NAVIHOME/bin/nsd -c $NAVIHOME/nsd.ini & LD_PRELOAD= We pulled the libc.so.5.0.9 from our previous configuration. libc.so.5.3.9 did not work for us. This solution also solved the ns_sendmail, and the postgres.so I/O problem I eluded to in a previous posting (see: The State of AOLserver, Linux, and Postgres). With PostgreSQL, I was able to create and insert into a table created without any constraints. is null and unique did not work. I have not investigated this problem any further. These occur infrequently, but just enough for me to get annoyed and for most of the info on the server to remain unseen. It happens with both pages created by our code and the AOLServer setup pages. The server apparently chokes on the pages, and sends the popular "Document contains no data" message. From what the log says, one would assume the file sizes are enormous, but this is not the case. The max size of information sent by our code is about 10k. Once I bounce the server, all is well again. These messages appear to coincide with my recent installation with the external database driver (nsext.so) for the Illustra proxy daemon (nsillpd). To test this, I moved back to nsill.so ("internal" db driver) and these errors do not occur. From the docs on the daemon, there are limits to sizes of SQL statements and things of that nature, but what I'm doing has nothing to do with the database. For some reason, I don't think the sockets and the daemon play nice with each other. Has anyone seen similar behavior from AOLServer? Here's a bit more background: For TCL/Tk applications, you can create a procedure (typically called tkerror) that is called if the interpreter runs into an error. I guess its a Tk-only feature, but I think AOLserver must be using something similar, because if a TCL error occurs on the server, it sends that standard "Server Error" page back to the client. What I'd like to do is create a replacement for AOLserver's standard error handler. My procedure would send the server admin (who happens to be off-site) an e-mail/pager message with the error text, then display the standard message for the client. Currently, you would need to put catches around all your registered procs, but allowing for registration of a general error handler is a really good idea. Even just being able to specify an email address to mail Tcl errors to would be good. We'll keep it in mind for a future version. doug -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McKee, Manager, Web Server Development Email: doug@aol.net America Online, Inc. Hey all, Check out a beta distribution of the new nsftp module at http://www.aolserver.com/beta/nsftp.html It is a fully-functioning FTP server that uses the AOLserver's permission system. If anonymous FTP logins are permitted, users can browse and download from the website via FTP as well. The nsftp module supports most FTP commands including: ls, get, put, mget, mput, site, md, rd, cd, rename, del, type, syst, and quit. The module also has a logging system that tracks uploads and downloads using the Xferlog format (the same one as wu-ftp) and records system commands. This is a beta version of the nsftp module and=A0is not yet feature complete. Expect a complete version sometime in May with the AOLserver 2.2 release. Features still to be added include: * Ability to run HTTP traces and filters with ftp GET's and PUT's. This will give you transparent logging of ftp accesses to the standard AOLserver access log as well as automatic updating of full text indices. * Support for ftp passive mode to allow you to use the nsftp module through a firewall by having the server control the data connection port numbers rather than the client * Support for Linux (maybe even this week!) Enjoy, and send feedback to serverbugs@aolserver.com. doug -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McKee, Manager, Web Server Development Email: doug@aol.net America Online, Inc.
