A few of the new features we're most excited about are: * ASP support; you can now embed Tcl inside your HTML pages using a syntax very similar to Microsoft's Active Server Pages. It opens up a whole new way of thinking about how you want to build your AOLserver application. We're going to be doing a lot to optimize this and make it even better in AOLserver 3.0! * Our nsftp module that lets you administer your web site through either HTTP or FTP and use the same access control mechanism. * Support for building proxies on top of AOLserver, and sample code that does just that! A great example of the extensibility of AOLserver. So please download the first release and give us feedback (feedback@aolserver.com) ASAP so we can fix any new bugs we may have introduced and so we can fine tune the new stuff! doug -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McKee, Manager, Web Server Development Email: doug@aol.net America Online, Inc. For example, I'd like to send form results via email to a recipient. I've created a program to do this using Perl alone as well as one using Perl to call a compiled executable. The executable's error code indicates that it's unable to open a socket, while the all-Perl approach results in an Aolserver "Configuration Error" message being sent to the browser. (Perl programs which don't try to open a socket run fine, no "Configuration Error") Most recently, I setup CyberCash and tested their supplied Perl scripts which connect to their server from the command prompt. They consistently work from the command prompt, but when tried as a form action they report that they're unable to create a socket. Does anyone have a clue as to what's happening? I really don't want to give up AOLServer, but... Please reply to hsamuels@puresource.com. Thanks in advance! Isnt this just a matter of setting up an ODBC datasource (assuming you're on Windows NT) and linking to it using the ODBC driver provided with AOLserver? Make sure it's a SYSTEM DSN (there are two tabs in the ODBC control panel) otherwise AOLserver won't find your ODBC source. And of course that you have the appropriate ODBC drivers loaded on your server. Then just create a new database pool, of type ODBC, with the name of your DSN in the box where it asks for it. If you then restart your AOLserver, and look in the log file, you will see whether or not the pool is being created, and if it isn't it will give you a (fairly) helpful ODBC error message. YES ! I have the solution for you. There has been much discussion about this problem on NT, and I encountered it myself when adding a CGI kind of support to my list server package. When I shelled programs with the default environment, socket programs worked, but when I created my own environment (like AOLServer does) they didn't work. Hmm.... The problem is that Windows Sockets *will*not*work* unless the environment variable "SYSTEMROOT" is defined and pointing to the Windows directory. Since AOLServer does not define this environment variable, and does not inherit it from the default system config, this causes all CGI scripts which use sockets to fail. The solution is to define the SYSTEMROOT environment variable before using any sockets. The easiest way to do this globally for all CGI programs is to use the AOLServer advanced CGI configure page to define an environment variable called "SYSTEMROOT" with a value of "C:\WINNT35" (or whatever it normally is). Then, make sure that all your CGI programs use this environment. Another way, in Perl, to do this, is to put the line "$ENV{'SYSTEMROOT'} = 'c:\winnt35'; at the beginning of your program. The AOLserver environment method is certainly easier, though. That will fix your problem, and socket based CGI programs will run fine. I use AOLserver 2.1 in Solaris 2.5.1. The problem is whith cookies and relocation HTTP-headers. I use the standard CGI interface with C programs and I get a few cookies sent along that I have previously set. That works fine. The problem is when I want to redirect to another URL by replying with a "Location" HTTP header. The redirection works, but cookies are lost, they are not passed on to the new URL. So, I tried to add the cookies myself with "Set-Cookie" HTTP headers, but that gives me a server error reply. Somehow a redirect WITH cookies should be possible, but this is a hard to grasp area in web-design and I am not sure AOLserver is doing anything wrong, but I think this is the case. The workaround I have done now is to create a temporary HTML page with an onLoad javascript event handler that simply sets the location property and thus redirects to that URL. It is not a perfect solution though since this intermediate page shows up in the history (back button). I think there should be a FAQ to answer these commonly asked questions about AOLserver. Is there one already available? If so, it would be nice if it was regularly posted on this mailing list. I don't run AOLServer on my own boxes, but I'm a PrimeHost customer, so I've been trying to learn some Tcl, and I've also played around a bit with the AOLServer Tcl API. I recently wanted to experiment with the ns_sock* procedures, so I built this small script which basically should act as a bare-bones POP3 client. If you want to take a look at the code, I've put it up at: http://www.vallegrande.com/rosman/testpop.tcl.txt The 'testpop' procedure should be called with three arguments: the name of a host (on which of course a POP3 server must be running on port 110), the name of a valid user ID on that server, and the password. It should return a null string if there are no messages in the mailbox, or a list of messages if there are any. Each one of the list elements is a list with four elements: the From field, the Date field, the Subject field and finally the message body. My little script is still under development, so lots of things are to be done, and I'm just an amateur programmer, so I wanted some friendly advice :) Would it be safe to ns_schedule this script so it'll be run once every xx minutes, or do you see any nasty, potential server-crashing errors? If I could let it run automatically, it could be very useful for my purposes -- for instance, I could put up an automatically generated page on my site which would update itself based on incoming mail.. etc. Of course, in that case, a "DELE" POP3 command should be added to the procedure so the same messages wouldn't be fed in over and over again. (But maybe I'm reinventing the wheel here, and there are finished products that achieve the same result more, er, "professionally"...) Any comments will be greatly appreciated. We would want to completely control the look of the pages (hopefully dynamically), and possibly cross reference items in the storefront if this is possible or maybe make our own new simpler approach to the storefront on our secure server. We are a commercial service level client of PrimeHost. Is there an easy way to reference graphics in a database (for instance: say we have 500 photos, gif or jpeg format, that we want to have them in one directory for easy modification if needed, and we want them to be shown dynamically on the referenced page or entry in the database, of course along with all the description of the particular resource. The search features would need to be like amazon.com or cdnow.com, be able to search boolean and control the results, etc. I hope I haven't rambled or confused what I am trying to say. If anyone as any suggestions that might help us from not going down the wrong path it would be much appreciated. Associated Tcl functions, C functions, and configuration file sections have all had their names changed accordingly, so be sure to check out the differences and update any of your existing code and configuration files if necessary. * A new RollLog configuration file parameter that determines whether access logs are rolled using the periodic automatic roll logging. * A new EnableTclPages configuration file parameter that determines whether .tcl files under the pageroot will be parsed. This change was made for security reasons. * Server-parsed HTML mappings no longer include /*.shtml by default. If you want .shtml files to be processed using server-parsed HTML, you must specifically add /*.shtml to your Map entry. This change was made for security reasons. * The following bug fixes: * Global variables are unset only after processing an ADP file at the "top level", i.e., after visiting an ADP file or calling an ADP file with ns_adp_include or ns_adp_parse from an HTML page. Global variables are not unset after recursive calls to ADP processing or after calling ns_adp_parse from a regular Tcl script. * The full text indexes and archives are now updated when AOLpress saves a MiniWeb. * Memory allocated when processing a CGI as part of an SHTML page is now freed. * Tcl filters can now abort processing of a connection. Note that the syntax used to do this has changed slightly. * Numerous bugs in the nsftp module supplied for Linux in Beta 2 have been fixed. We've also updated the list of known bugs, and encourage you to let us know about any problems or feedback you might have by sending mail to feedback@aolserver.com. doug -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McKee, Manager, Web Server Development Email: doug@aol.net America Online, Inc. The problem is that the Illustra Text Datablade will not index numbers, and there is nothing AOLserver can do about it. The best we could do (and we didn't do it) would be to give you a better error message. Integrating AOLserver with a better full text engine, preferably a free one, would sure be nice, and although we here at AOL don't have any current plans to do so, we'd be happy to help anyone who wanted to take this up! doug -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McKee, Manager, Web Server Development Email: doug@aol.net America Online, Inc. You need to use libc 5.0.9 with this verison of AOLServer because of an incompatibility with the pthreads library. This is available in ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/GCC; you can use the LD_PRELOAD environmental variable so that you don't have to replace your main copy of libc with this old version. The beta version of AOLServer also works with the more recent versions of libc, which is documented and available from our web site (http://www.aolserver.com) George ------- End of forwarded message ------- ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 15:58:36 -0400 Reply-To: Web Development with AOLserver Sender: Web Development with AOLserver From: Doug McKee Subject: [erico@aol.net: Re: [nrosner@slack.net: Tcl proc to fetch POP3 messages]] ------- Start of forwarded message ------- Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 15:48:44 -0400 (EDT) From: "Eric O'Laughlen" X-Sender: erico@oscar.office.aol.com Reply-To: "Eric O'Laughlen" To: nrosner@slack.net cc: Doug McKee Subject: Re: [nrosner@slack.net: Tcl proc to fetch POP3 messages] In-Reply-To: <199706301614.MAA08545@helix.office.aol.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII On Mon, 30 Jun 1997, Doug McKee wrote: Hey Nicolas, > Would it be safe to ns_schedule this script so it'll be run once every xx > minutes, or do you see any nasty, potential server-crashing errors? You don't want your script blocking due to a remote server problem and as you experiment more with the API, you may want to try using ns_sockselect which could allow you the flexiblity to check multiple hosts using file descriptor sets and I/O multiplexing! Happy programming. o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o | Eric O'Laughlen e-mail: erico@aol.net| | AOL Web Development W: 703.918.2142 | o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o ------- End of forwarded message -------
